About the Role

The GOA Instrumentation & Automation Engineer provides technical support and engineering assurance for instrumentation, automation, control, safety, and associated electrical systems supporting the Shenzi facility, infield subsea flowlines, and related equipment. The role is primarily focused on Instrumentation & Automation, with electrical capability, including technical ownership of hazardous-area equipment and I&A/electrical interfaces. The position supports safe, reliable operation through technical assurance, troubleshooting, engineering changes, reliability improvement, and project execution. The position reports to the GOA Surface Engineering Manager and is based in Houston, Texas.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Provide technical leadership and assurance for instrumentation, automation, control, safety, fire and gas, and associated systems supporting the Shenzi facility and subsea systems.
• Provide technical ownership for hazardous-area equipment and installations, including equipment selection, certification, installation, inspection, maintenance interfaces, and resolution of technical issues.
• Troubleshoot issues across instrumentation, PLC/DCS/HMI, safety systems, communications, metering, field devices, and electrical interfaces, working closely with Operations, Maintenance, vendors, and other engineering disciplines.
• Apply electrical engineering experience to power supplies, UPS/DC systems, motor control, drives, grounding, and electrical distribution.
• Provide technical support and assurance for production, allocation, and fiscal measurement systems and associated projects.
• Serve as System Custodian for designated Safety Critical Systems and support critical control assurance, health monitoring, and lifecycle management.
• Lead or participate in Root Cause Analyses, reliability improvement, abnormal operating condition assessments, and Case to Operate activities.
• Review and implement engineering and maintenance changes in accordance with Management of Change requirements.
• Participate in HAZID, HAZOP, LOPA, SIL, functional safety, commissioning, and start-up activities.
• Provide technical direction to contractors, consultants, suppliers, and service providers and support engineering projects through design, procurement, testing, commissioning, and handover.
• Travel offshore as required for field verification, troubleshooting, commissioning, assurance, and other engineering activities.

Skills and Experience

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor of Science degree in Instrumentation Engineering, Controls Engineering, Electrical Engineering or a closely related engineering discipline.
• Approximately 10+ years of relevant industry experience in oil and gas, energy, petrochemical, or comparable process industries.
• Strong instrumentation, automation, and controls capability, supported by practical electrical engineering experience in operating facilities.
• Proven experience across design, construction, factory and site acceptance testing, commissioning, start-up, operations, maintenance, troubleshooting, and reliability improvement.
• Combination of operating-asset and project experience is preferred.
• Ability to solve complex, cross-discipline problems and understand interfaces among process equipment, instrumentation, control and safety systems, communications networks, and electrical systems.
• Demonstrated autonomy, business acumen, teamwork, influencing ability, and clear written and verbal communication.
• Experience in offshore facilities and knowledge of Gulf of America regulatory requirements are preferred.

Technical Knowledge and Experience

• Instrumentation, control systems, PLC/DCS/HMI, safety systems, fire and gas, communications, control valves, analyzers, and field devices.
• Hazardous-area engineering principles and associated equipment selection, installation, inspection, and maintenance requirements.
• Electrical systems supporting or interfacing with automation, including switchgear, MCCs, drives, UPS/DC systems, grounding, and protective devices.
• Production and fiscal measurement systems, including flowmeters, analyzers, flow computers, sampling, and proving systems.
• Functional safety and alarm-management principles, including SIL lifecycle activities, proof testing, bypass management, and alarm performance.
• Ability to interpret engineering documentation including control narratives, cause-and-effect diagrams, loop drawings, schematics, one-lines, datasheets, and test procedures.
• Familiarity with applicable industry standards including IEC 61511, ISA 18.2, API RP 14C, NFPA 72, NEC, API RP 14F/14FZ, and relevant offshore and hazardous-area requirements.
• Experience with Allen-Bradley, RSView Studio, AutroSafe, OSI PI, Modbus TCP, Ethernet/IP, or similar systems is preferred.
