About the Role:

We are seeking an experienced Tax Advisor to serve as in-country tax professional for Woodside's Mexico operations. The role provides first-line of ownership of Mexican tax matters, including direct and indirect taxes, tax accounting, tax risk management and business advisory support. The position acts as the key interface between the business, the global tax team, external advisers, auditors, SAT and strategic partners, while ensuring tax compliance and governance objectives are achieved.
The Tax Advisor will work collaboratively alongside the Tax and Finance team in Mexico City, while partnering closely with the Houston Tax Managers on significant tax positions, strategic initiatives and high-risk matters.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Tax Compliance Oversight and Technical Review
•    Own the Mexico tax compliance calendar and ensure timely delivery of all direct and indirect tax obligations.
•    Review monthly and annual income tax returns, VAT filings, withholding tax returns and statutory tax reporting.
•    Act as the first reviewer for tax calculations, filings, tax accounting schedules, supporting workpapers and reconciliations.
•    Lead the first-level technical review of complex tax matters, including tax deductibility requirements, tax treatment and tax reporting requirements.
•    Establish and maintain robust tax controls, documentation standards and governance processes.
•    Drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance compliance efficiency and reduce compliance risk.


Tax Accounting, Reporting and Provision Review
•    Lead preparation and review of half-year and year-end tax reporting deliverables.
•    Review current and deferred tax calculations, effective tax rate analyses, uncertain tax positions and tax disclosures under IFRS.
•    Coordinate tax inputs for statutory audits and external reporting requirements.
•    Ensure consistency between tax reporting, statutory accounts and corporate governance requirements.
•    Provide technical guidance on the tax implications of accounting matters. 


VAT Recovery, Tax Controversy and SAT Management
•    Lead Mexico's VAT recovery strategy and oversee preparation and submission of VAT refund claims.
•    Manage interactions with SAT, including information requests, audits, examinations and tax authority reviews.
•    Coordinate responses to tax controversies and disputes while working with external advisers and legal counsel as required.
•    Assess tax risks arising from audits, positions taken and changing tax legislation, and recommend mitigation strategies.
•    Escalate significant risks, uncertain tax treatments and material exposures to the Houston Tax Manager on a timely basis.  

Business Partnering and Commercial Tax Advisory
•    Serve as the tax adviser to in-country business stakeholders.
•    Provide practical tax advice on corporate income tax, VAT, withholding tax, transfer pricing, hydrocarbon taxation, customs considerations and related regulatory matters.
•    Review and advise on commercial contracts, procurement arrangements, financing transactions and operational activities.
•    Work with our partner, PEMEX, and external stakeholders on tax-sensitive matters.
•    Monitor tax law developments and communicate practical business impacts and recommended actions.


Strategic Tax Support and Governance
•    Support major tax planning, restructuring, financing and cross-border initiatives affecting Mexico operations.
•    Perform technical research and prepare recommendations on complex tax issues.
•    Assist with transfer pricing governance and coordinate preparation of local and global transfer pricing documentation.
•    Support tax risk assessments related to various business initiatives.
•    Ensure compliance with Woodside governance frameworks, delegated authority requirements and internal tax policies.


Stakeholder Management
•    Build and maintain strong relationships with business leaders, Finance, Legal, Commercial, Treasury, Internal Audit, external advisers, SAT, PEMEX and external auditors.
•    Influence stakeholders and drive effective decision-making through clear communication of tax risks and opportunities.
•    Act as the first escalation point for routine and moderately complex tax matters.

Skills & Experience:

Required Qualifications
•    Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Taxation, Law or a related discipline.
•    Minimum 10 years of relevant experience in Mexican taxation within a multinational corporation, Big Four accounting firm, law firm or combination thereof.
•    Deep technical expertise in Mexican corporate income tax, VAT, withholding taxes, transfer pricing and tax accounting.
•    Demonstrated experience reviewing complex tax positions and managing tax authority interactions.
•    Experience leading VAT refund processes, tax audits and controversy matters.
•    Strong understanding of IFRS tax accounting, tax provisions and financial reporting requirements.
•    Proven ability to lead projects, influence stakeholders and manage competing priorities.
•    Fluency in English and Spanish.


Preferred Experience
•    CPA, CA, Master's in Tax or equivalent advanced qualification.
•    Significant oil and gas, energy, infrastructure or capital-intensive industry experience.
•    Experience supporting major projects, joint ventures and operational readiness activities.
•    Experience with restructurings, M&A transactions and cross-border investments.
•    Experience interacting with SAT, PEMEX and other government authorities.
•    Experience with SAP (or comparable ERP), OneSource and tax reporting systems.
