About the Role:
The Surface Engineering Specialist I is responsible for providing engineering support to the Shenzi TLP facility in the Gulf of America. This position requires interface with Surface Engineering, Operations, Production Engineering, Process Safety, HSE and other functions. This entry level role is responsible for providing technical support to the production facility and assisting delivery of engineering objectives in support of the broader Woodside Energy objectives.
The Surface Engineering Specialist I will be based in Houston, TX and will report to the Frontline Engineering Team Lead for the Gulf of America.
Duties & Responsibilities:
• Provide engineering support to surface engineers, operations, and maintenance teams. Foster supportive and effective relationships with both facility and office-based teams.
• Develop engineering recommendations and solutions to support safe and reliable operations which may include new permanent or temporary equipment, investigations, and other assigned tasks.
• Identify, design, and implement engineering & maintenance change projects as assigned in accordance with Management of Change procedures and work management requirements. Provide input and review where applicable for management of change projects led by others.
• Participate in, or lead, HAZOPs, HAZIDs, LOPAs, other risk assessments and Design Reviews as required.
• Lead or participate as a member of Root Cause Analysis (RCA) teams as required (and broader Value Improvement Project, VIP, program).
• Provision of technical expertise and direction into “Operational Risk Assessment” scenarios.
• Provides governance and oversight to ensure engineering practices are carried out in accordance with the required technical standards, processes, and procedures while operating in compliance with local regulations and corporate standards.
• Provide guidance to engineering contractors on the application of Woodside’s procedures and guidelines.
• Periodic travel to offshore facilities may be required to support projects. Trips could be from a minimum of 3 days to more than a week.
Skills & Experience:
- A Bachelor of Science in Electrical, Chemical, Mechanical, Petroleum, or other relevant discipline.
- Strong technical background and awareness of process and personnel safety
- Demonstrates adaptability, a learning mindset, fortitude, and strong communication skills
- Demonstrates strong teamwork and influencing skills, fostering camaraderie between offshore and onshore team members
- Demonstrates HSE and process safety leadership in operating environments and feels safe to express ideas and concerns to cut off threat lines for risks proactively
- Demonstrates high levels of business acumen
- Knowledge in system integration – ability to solve complex problems and understand complexities in interfaces between all engineering disciplines in an operational environment with support and oversight
- Able to pass required physical and training for safe offshore travel and work (T-BOSIET w/ CA-EBS)
- Able to qualify for and obtain a TWIC to allow for offshore facility travel and work
- Awareness of API codes affecting offshore facility design (E.g., API RP 14C, 14E, 520, 521) is a plus
- Awareness of ISA/IEE codes for safety and control systems is a plus
- Awareness of PI/SCADA systems, ability to read and interpret P&IDs and other facility engineering documentation, and utilize the same for preliminary RCAs and projects is a plus
- Experience supporting oil & gas facilities is a plus
- Working knowledge of Aspen HYSYS is a plus
- Knowledge of flow assurance risks associated with offshore deepwater production facilities is a plus.
- Knowledge of production and water injection system chemical treatment is a plus.
- Water injection (seawater processing) experience is a plus.
- Experience with relevant process safety risk assessments and functional safety tools is a plus
- Experience with / knowledge of BSEE, USGC, 30 CFR Part 250 regulatory requirements is a plus.
